Review

I suppose the contrast between the two bands tonight is a kind of fire and ice. While
Dyonisis are mellow and enchanting, The Way of All Flesh are here to rock your
socks off.

Well, they’re here to try and rock your socks off, but the heat means some people are
like yo-yo’s to the dancefloor (although some dedicated fans do dance the whole set
through).

They actually play a specially extended set for this gig. Because of this you get the
album almost in its entirety, plus a good selection of new songs. Their album is a
strong album; fittingly they manage to take their set through some of the different
musical contrasts of the album. You can be blown away by ‘Final Resolve’ and then
get your lighters out for the balladic ‘Espirit D’escalier’.

New material is also sounding promising, it’s keeping up a rockier pace and it’s
keeping that same core TWOAF sound. Having heard the songs once, it’s maybe too
early to case a verdict, but these are sounding like a natural and promising
progression of the band.

I wasn’t really surprised there were calls for an encore, the band had made a real
impact, and it was nice to hear their version of ‘Alice’, although (not sure if anybody
noticed) Kelly forgot to tune his guitar back to normal, having detuned it for set
finisher ‘Last Words’. It’s a stonking cover and I wouldn’t be surprised if it crops up
in their set again from time to time.

It’s a strong performance in whole and it really adds some added heat to an already
hot day! Perhaps my only criticism being the over-plugging of merchandise! I mean,
it’s important for the band to sell merchandise, but it gets a bit of overkill! Still, small
on the scope of it… . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .(8)

Midian, 2005

Review

However, The Way of All Flesh do seem to have that ‘extra edge’
to them. Self-professed ‘Unashamed Gothic Rock.’ TWOAF are
just that. ‘Esprit d’Escalier’ is an extremely strong album, so it
makes full sense they practically play it in its entirety tonight.
Surprising, the only omission is the title track!
‘Andromeda’ is epic on galactic levels, whilst ‘So Cold’ is like a
long-forgotten classic re-discovered. We could argue until the cows
come home whether having a more 80’s sound is a good thing, or a
bad thing, but the facts are that TWOAF have a very strong arsenal
of material which can be enjoyed whatever your leanings. . . . . .(7)
